For Now, No Autopsy

I was supposed to go in for an autopsy yesterday. As I was instructed, I phoned the Pathology Office between 8:15 and 8:30 AM.

That’s when I got the bad news. There wasn’t going to be any autopsy at the location I had requested. Unfortunately for me, there wouldn’t be any until Thursday at the earliest. But I can’t go because I’ll be headed out of town during the last week of Summer Break.

So instead I drove back home and have been filling my time with the Olympics and cleaning out/packing up my room.

My room (at my parent’s house) has looked horribly messy. I’m sure it’s getting on my mom’s nerves. But its messy because I’m packing things in boxes and throwing out trash. So in the end, it’ll all be worth while.

During our 4th year orientation week we had a day for pathology, which included a trip to the Autopsy suite. Unfortunately, their were no autopsies our day either. The Chief of Pathology then gave us a very interesting lecture on autopsies. Apparently, the rate of autopsies has decreased drastically (I want to say 50%) just in the past 30 years. Alot of families don’t request them, and alot of physicians aren’t offering them. I got to see one during my 2nd year and it was a neat experience. Alot better than anatomy since the tissues are not preserved. If you can find a chance to squeeze it in some time before you graduate, I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Actually, I don’t have a choice. Its a requirement at Loma Linda to proceed to 3rd year.

I guess it makes sense that autopsy rates are going down. Thanks for the comment. I think I’m gonna look forward to seeing one!

From what I hear, we can’t do anything in an autopsy (for legal reasons). I’ll write a post about it as soon as I finally get in on one..

At our school, we weren’t allowed to make any incisions, but we were allowed to touch the fresh tissue. Feeling fresh bowel is ALOT different than embalmed bowel. Same with other tissues like the lungs and vasculature. They just tried to allow us a more realistic picture of what anatomy is like in a surgery as opposed to anatomy lab.

Yeah. I’ve been told by a classmate that its a lot different than Anatomy lab. She said the autopsy looked “prettier.”
